Are you an academic whose research demonstrates impact beyond the University setting? Have you dedicated time to public engagement with research?
If so, you may be in line to win £1,000 for your efforts.
Applications for the Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Impact and Public Engagement are now open, with a ceremony and prize-giving scheduled for 13 July.
There are two separate award categories: one for impact; another for public engagement. Full details of the awards, including eligibility and how to enter, can be found on the Research Strategy Office’s webpages. The deadline for entries is Friday, 21 April.
The Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Impact and Public Engagement are back after a successful pilot year in 2016.
Public Engagement with Research Award
Dr Paul Coxon, a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Materials Science & Metallurgy, was recognised for engaging the public with his research into the efficiency of solar batteries. Dr Coxon reached audiences that would not have typically come across his work by speaking at social clubs, bingo halls and classic car events. You can view a video on him here, and other films about last year’s public engagement winners here.
Best Impact Award
Dr Nita Forouhi and Dr Fumiaki Imamura from the School of Clinical Medicine were recognised in 2016 for their work on the relationship between nutrition and the risk of diabetes and obesity. They influenced policy and guidance bodies on a range of topics, including the impact of sugary drinks on health, and the link between processed meats and diabetes. Learn more about them here.
